Fire as Divine Imagery

Beginning with sensitivity to the community's recent trauma from January's devastating wildfires that killed 30 people and destroyed over 18,000 structures, Father Rob acknowledged how fire imagery might feel difficult. Yet he proceeded to unpack Scripture's rich use of fire symbolism.

Throughout the Bible, fire represents two primary aspects of God's nature. First, it symbolizes divine judgment—from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah to Jesus's warnings about separating good from evil "like throwing them into the fiery furnace." Second, fire represents God's holy presence, beginning with Moses's burning bush and continuing through Mount Sinai's fiery descent and the pillar of fire that guided Israel through the wilderness.

The Same Fire, Different Results

Father Rob's most striking insight was that "the fire that destroys and the fire that empowers is the same fire." The difference lies in what Jesus accomplished on the cross. Christ absorbed the fiery judgment deserved by believers, allowing God's holy fire to become purifying rather than destructive.

Under the Old Covenant, approaching God's holiness meant death—hence the elaborate rituals for the high priest entering the Holy of Holies. Under the New Covenant, Jesus's sacrifice enables believers to encounter God's purifying fire safely through Word, sacraments, and Spirit.

Practical Transformation

This purifying fire works differently in each believer's life. Sometimes it comes as gentle whispers during quiet time, other times through powerful encounters at worship or conferences. Father Rob shared personal experiences of God's convicting word revealing areas needing cleansing—a sometimes painful but ultimately healing process.

The ultimate goal is sanctification: growing in holiness and becoming more like Christ. Whether through word-based conviction, sacramental grace, or charismatic encounters, God uses his purifying fire to burn away sin and impart holiness, transforming believers into agents of his kingdom.
