This week, the Second Sunday in Lent, our readings focus on the call and cost of discipleship. Abraham is called to do the impossible - sacrifice his son - and God teaches him that the life of obedience is only possible by God's provision. Jesus, after rebuking Peter, explains that we must die to ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him. This is a death of sin, the end of self-centered existence, and the new birth of Christ-centered living. It is, again, only possible by and through and in Jesus. We can only do what God calls us to do with God's power and Spirit making it so.
