This Sunday is known as "Good Shepherd Sunday," with familiar texts (such as Psalm 23) highlighting the image of Jesus as the Shepherd of our souls. What struck me in preparing for this service was the fact that we are known by God. The collect states: "Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name..." In the Gospel lesson, Jesus says that "the sheep follow him, for they know his voice." God knows each of us intimately, and invites us to know Him and follow where he leads.
Here's a preview of the new or unfamiliar songs we'll be singing.
During Communion, we will meditate on these themes with a song from Fernando Ortega - "The Good Shepherd":
Another newer song we will sing is "Christ is Risen." We continue to rejoice and celebrate the Resurrection throughout Eastertide.
As we have been doing throughout Easter, we will close with a benediction from Hebrews: "Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. (Heb. 13:20-21)" Amen! I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.
