This week we celebrate the Day of Pentecost, when the Church remembers her birthday and honors the Holy Spirit as the force and presence undergirding all of our worship and mission. The Spirit that came on Pentecost in fire and wind is the ongoing reality of the God of the Universe, in the way God has chosen to reveal the true nature of things. The Church does not contain or control the Spirit, but rather the Spirit is the "Lord and giver of life," as the Creed states. Just as Genesis describes the Spirit "hovering over the waters" of creation, the Spirit again hovered over the creation of God's kingdom people, the Church. It is my hope that this Pentecost celebration will remind us of the essential nature of God's Holy Spirit indwelling and guiding our mission. We cannot accomplish God's plans for our lives unless we are relying solely on the presence and power of the Spirit.
We'll sing two new songs this week, highlighting the theme of this feast day.
"Holy Spirit," by Brian and Katie Torwalt:
"Build Your Kingdom Here," by Rend Collective:
