Songs We're Singing - November 2 (All Saints)

This week we celebrate the feast of All Saints, commemorating the "glorious company" of those who have gone before us, as well as the global communion of saints joining in worship throughout the world right now. We will also continue our Philippians study. There's a serendipitous overlap of the two themes. The passage in Philippians exhorts us to "press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (Phil 3:14) This image of running for a prize and pressing on is connected to the communion of saints in Hebrews 12:1: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us..." We are encouraged and inspired by all of the lives and witness of our spiritual mothers and fathers, and so we find ourselves not running solo, but simply one of a great multitude pressing upward and onward in the one true faith.

We will sing many familiar songs this week (Beautiful Savior, O Church Arise, Take My Life and Let it Be), but we'll also sing a newer one called "How Great is Your Faithfulness." The chorus is especially appropriate for our theme: "The heavens ring, the saints all sing, great is Your faithfulness!":

I look forward to joining you in worship this Sunday!
